Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an interesting mushroom, and certainly not your classic-looking mushroom, because it does not have a cap and stem like many people associated with mushrooms. Lion’s mane mushroom is globe-shaped, with cascading spines or teeth instead of gills. Depending on the conditions that lion’s mane is grown in, the teeth will be varying in size and typically cascade down towards the body once the mushroom is ready for harvest.

Lion’s mane mushroom as a “functional mushroom”
There are thousands of edible mushrooms in the world, yet not all of them are consumed as food often, and there are some that are considered to be of higher quality than others. Lion’s mane is among these mushrooms.
Truthfully, only a small amount of mushrooms are considered to be functional mushrooms. According to Eat This, Not That!, “15 are recognized to have what are called functional benefits. This means that beyond their nutritional benefits, they have each been found to help support overall health and well-being in one way or another (i.e. lowering stress levels, sharpening cognitive function, providing a boost of energy, etc.).”
Lion’s mane falls into this special category, and it is seen as a mushroom that is used for supporting the brain and mind.
Traditional uses associated with lion’s mane may have led to the development of the best lion’s mane capsules in modern times
Many cultures throughout the world have consumed edible mushrooms. These people were mostly eating the fruited mushroom body, which is what our lion’s mane capsules are made of.
There have been a variety of studies conducted on lion’s mane. For instance, the study Lion's Mane, Hericium erinaceus and Tiger Milk, Lignosus rhinocerotis (Higher Basidiomycetes) Medicinal Mushrooms Stimulate Neurite Outgrowth in Dissociated Cells of Brain, Spinal Cord, and Retina: An In Vitro Study took a look at neurodegenerative disease, which impacts nearly 100 million people worldwide.
The study states, “Hericium erinaceus is one of the well-established medicinal mushrooms for neuronal health. It has been documented for its regenerative capability in peripheral nerve.”
It continued to say, “H. erinaceus extract at 50 µg/mL triggered neurite outgrowth at 20.47%, 22.47%, and 21.70% in brain, spinal cord, and retinal cells.”
This means that it may support neurons in producing new projections as they grow in response to guidance cues.
Let’s take a look at a different study now. The authors of Neuronal Health – Can Culinary and Medicinal Mushrooms Help? cite a variety of studies, including Improving effects of the mushroom Yamabushitake (Hericium erinaceus) on mild cognitive impairment: a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial from 2009. Here is a look at how the study was conducted, from an excerpt in Neuronal Health – Can Culinary and Medicinal Mushrooms Help?
“In another study, a double-blind trial was conducted with 50- to 80-year-old Japanese men and women diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment in order to examine the efficacy of oral administration of H. erinaceus, for improving cognitive impairment, using a cognitive function scale based on the revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R). The subjects in the H. erinaceus group took four 250 mg tablets containing 96% of Yamabushitake dry powder three times a day for 16 weeks. Cognitive function scale scores increased with the duration of intake. Laboratory tests showed no adverse effect of H. erinaceus. The study suggested that H. erinaceus is effective in improving mild cognitive impairment.”
